Quick Facts about Kathryn Costello

• Her work has been exhibited in and around the Boston area.

• She has a dedicated dance practice.

• The Professional Photographers Association of Massachusetts featured her specifically teaching Dance & Creative Portraits in its 2026 program.

• Her work has includes professional dancers and Boston Ballet dancers in her latest exhibition.

• She has testimonials from people connected to professional performance and skating, including Disney On Ice and the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation.

• She values authentic expression above all else. She sees past what is superficial to find what is real. Whether her camera is focused on a dance position or a headshot, she is aiming for your heart. Her sessions are filled with laughter, creative energy, and sometimes happy tears.

• She cycled from Montana to Alaska. When Summer came to an abrupt end, she found herself alone. Alaska was losing seven minutes a daylight a day and each morning you could see ominous snowfall on the distant peaks. This is when she first emerged as a photographer. As she puts it, “It was the first time I photographed what I was feeling, not what I was seeing.”

• She started shooting on black and white film in the year 2000 with a Speed Graphic 4×5 press camera. When developing one negative took 30 minutes, you usually don’t make the same mistake twice. This provided a disciplined approach and a technical foundation she still carries into her digital work today.

• Time is a running theme in her photography. She is fascinated by how time allows her to capture what the eye cannot see.

• It was the desire to photograph the night sky that first got her interested in photography at the age of 14.

In Her Own Words

I have spent over twenty-five years photographing people. My task is to see past the demeanor, past the discomfort of being in front of a camera, to something authentically real. I’ve always loved engaging with people one-on-one. I am, by nature, very introspective. I would rather spend an hour with one person, listening and paying close attention, than be in a crowd. That instinct shapes every session I photograph. I want to understand who someone is during the time we spend together. And that kind of attention is what allows someone to be at ease and simply be themselves.

When photographing a dancer, what I am looking for exists in a sliver of time, an instant that the eye alone would miss, but the camera immortalizes. Time, and what’s imperceptible about it, has stayed at the center of my work from the beginning, that split-second where a person expresses something profound and indescribable. I’ve built a body of work around capturing that moment.

Light is an obsession of mine. While I go on location sometimes, especially to photograph skaters which I love, my studio is my sanctuary. It gives me full creative control, natural light from two walls of windows when I want it, complete darkness when I want that instead, so that every photograph begins with intention. I build much of what appears in my portraits myself. I have painted my own backdrops and made my own props, because I want every element of a session, down to the smallest detail, to serve the person in front of me.

My work has been shown in galleries and exhibits in the Boston area, and that body of work matters deeply to me. I give so much of myself to every session. I think of photography not just as a service, but as one of my life’s greatest passions that is continuously evolving, one portrait at a time.

Outside the studio, I’m usually chasing light somewhere else entirely. My work has taken me around the country and across the world, photographing people, places, solar eclipses, the night skies, anything that shows me a new way to see.
